SPH simulation of bouncing bombs and stones
Prof. Joseph Monaghan (Monash University)
In the Second World war the Dams in the Ruhr area of Germany were attacked and destroyed using spinning bombs that bounced over the surface and sank before exploding near the dam wall. These bombs were invented by the English engineer Barnes Wallis. I will describe how SPH simulations can be used to simulate the dynamics of a bouncing bomb, or any other object such as a stone projected at a small angle to the water surface.
