Content

Environmental geology is part of the applied geolology. It is dealing with the interactions of humans with the geological environment - including the lithospere, hydrosphere, geomorphosphere, atmosphere, pedospere and biosphere.

In environmental geology, geological information is used to identify potential hazards and environmental degradation, and aims to find ways for prevention and mitigation, and to develop strategies to cope with natural and man-made environmental change.

The course gives an overview about relevant topics and is e.g. dealing with global material and energy cycles, natural (e.g. earthquakes and volcanism, mass movements and subsidence, climate (change), flooding) and anthropogenic (e.g. land use, road construction, power stations, pollution issues) environmental changes and natural hazards.

- Identification and understanding natural environmental change and resulting risks.

- Identification and understanding anthropogenic environmental change and resulting risks.

- Understanding selected methodological approaches used in environmental geology.

- Analysis of the effects of environmental changes on risk potentials, and development of suitable mitigation-strategies.
