Professor Annan Zhou from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) will visit the Institute of Geotechnical Engineering from the 9th-20th December, 2019 and teach the courses 873014 Thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled behaviour of soils and 873015 Numerical simulation of soil-atmosphere subjected to global climate change. Thermo-hydro-mechanical coupled behaviour of soils (in Eng.)

This short course will give you a brief introduction to soil’s basic behaviour under thermal, hydraulic and mechanical loads, with highlights on the coupling among thermo-hydro-mechanical responses. This course will cover the following topics
(1) Soil’s mechanical behaviour and testing methods;
(2) Water retention behaviour and tests;
(3) Unsaturated soils and its general behaviour;
(4) Advanced testing method on unsaturated soils;
(5) Soil behaviour in non-isothermal conditions; 
(6) Temperature effect on water retention behaviour.

Numerical simulation of soil-atmosphere subjected to global climate change (in Eng.)

This short course will give you a brief introduction to soil’s constitutive modelling method regarding the basic soil behaviour under thermal, hydraulic and mechanical loads, with highlight on the coupling among thermo-hydro-mechanical responses. This course will cover the following topics:
(1) Shear strength criteria for soils;
(2) Cam-clay model for saturated soils;
(3) Advanced soil model: UH model;
(4) Water retention equations and shear strength for unsaturated soils;
(5) Constitutive modelling for unsaturated soils; 
(6) Constitutive modelling for soils in non-isothermal conditions.

Bio of Guest Professor Annan Zhou

Professor Annan Zhou obtained his PhD degree in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Newcastle in 2011, with an Australian Endeavor Scholarship. Now he is an Associate Professor and HDR Manager for Civil and Infrastructure Engineering, Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). 
He was awarded the ARC DECRA Fellowship in 2012, the AGS Hugh Trollope Medal in 2014, the CGJ Outstanding Reviewer in 2016 and the ISSMGE Bright Spark Lecturer Award in 2018. The major research area of Professor Annan Zhou includes constitutive/numerical modelling of multi-phase porous media and advanced laboratory testing on unsaturated soils. He has published more than 80 referred journal papers. The quality of his publications has been recognised by being awarded several international awards like the ISSMGE ECR International Best Paper Award (2015) and the CGJ Editor’s Choice (2016). As a Chief Investigator, Professor Annan Zhou has secured several competitive research grants over 1.5million, including ARC DE, DP, and LP etc. He has successfully supervised 4 PhD to their completion. From 2014 to 2016, he was elected to be a RMIT University Research Committee Board Member to represent the ECR academics over the University. Since 2015, he serves as an editorial board member for Canadian Geotechnical Journal (NRC).
