The building industry consumes more than 40% of the raw materials, is responsible for ~36% of the emissions of the greenhouse gases (CO2), generates ~40% of solid waste (by weight), and uses ~40% of the total energy in Europe. Unfortunately, these facts have not yet generated a movement to counter the trend. Rather, there has been a significant increase in material used for building new structures and waste during service time; material-efficient structures and use concepts are still rare in general practice. Within this research area, we design and construct buildings with the best possible use of the natural resources and energy. We are concerned with questions about how we can increase the utilization factor of buildings by prevention of building materials and by use of technology and how to design for the best possible recycling after the end of service time.
