Collision protection for birds on the escape stairs at Guttenberg-Haus

In Austria, hundreds of thousands of birds die every year when they hit glass surfaces.

The external escape staircase of the Guttenberg-Haus lecture hall, known for its all-round glazing, was provided with collision protection for birds in October 2020 under the leading of BOKU Facility Management.

In collaboration with experts and following the guidelines of the Vienna Ombuds Office for Environmental Protection (Wiener Umweltanwaltschaft), a suitable sample was selected. It guarantees the highest possible impact protection (Category A, Highly Effective "Bird Protection"), without covering the glazed area more than necessary. Moreover, it leaves the appearance largely unchanged.

This measure is a pilot project on bird protection on buildings. BOKU will pursue this topic more intensively in the future and thus actively participate in the protection of bird life.
