Student halls of residence are an easy option when moving to a new city; they’re also a great way to make friends and contacts in a short time period. An easy way is to apply to the Austrian Exchange Service (OEAD) for a place in a student residence. But you can also contact the dormitories directly (more complicated, but probably cheaper) or look for private accommodation.
Book a room via OeAD Housing Service
Detailed information, terms and conditions are available online.
Please read them carefully and inform yourself about the registration procedure but also about the conditions for termination of the contract (which also apply in the current COVID-19 situation). The is no strict booking deadline, but the nice rooms might be booked out already in May for the winter semester and December for summer semester. However, in the current situation we do not recommend early booking!
To book a room in a student hall of residence- please contact the OeAD (Österreichischer Austausch Dienst - Austrian Exchange Service). Please note that the contract with the OeAD runs for at least one semester. Therefore, during this period you are able to switch places within the OeAD-homes (if there are free places) but you will not be able to move into private accommodation.
Please note: Rooms in the student residences are assigned on a first come, first serve basis.
Usually we recommend to apply in April or May for next winter semester. But due to the current COVID-19 situation we do not recommend early booking!
For applications submitted after August 15th for the winter semester and
January 15th for the summer semester there can be no guarantee that there are still free rooms available.
Register online at the website of the OeAD-Housing Office.
For the processing of your application the OeAD will charge an application fee of € 35. This fee is non-refundable.
After you have received an offer for a room via email, you can confirm it by transferring the deposit to the account indicated by the OeAD (further details will be sent to you along with the offer). The deposit usually amounts between € 750 and € 950. OeAD-Scholarship holders do have to pay a deposit of € 250.
Only after the OeAD has received the deposit will the room be booked for you.
You can choose between single and shared double rooms (see form). Just state your preference on the form. Prices start at € 330 for a shared double room, and between € 365 and € 900+ for a single room or flat.
Rooms can only be reserved for whole months (e.g. if you move in on 24 October you have to pay for the complete month of October. The other option would be to move in and pay from 1 November and stay in a hostel in the meantime). In July, August, September and February bookings for a day or half a month are possible in OeAD-Guesthouses.
To cover its costs, the OeAD housing service charges €18 per month for OeAD-scholarship holders, and all other students have to pay a fee of € 35,- for the processing of the application.
PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to withdraw your reservation please inform the OeAD as soon as possible! If you decide not to come to BOKU, please notify the BOKU-International Relations.
You will find more detailed information about the application here.
