Introduction to the models types:-statistical models, flood propagation model, rainfall runoff models, use of snowmelt models, use of meteorological forecasts-Application of a simple forecast model (conceptual rainfall runoff model). Assessment of potential forecast options (lead time, availability of met. forecasts). Optional (group tasks):
- Assessment of flood prevention measures
- Assessment of loss function
- Assessment of benefit cost estimation of measures
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
Provision of an overview of the existing concepts in flood forecasting (statistical models, flood propagation model, rainfall runoff models, use of snowmelt models, use of meteorological forecasts). Flood protection measures (structural / non-structural). Requirements for generation of flood protection master plans.
Knowledge of hydrological basics is recommended
After their attendance the students should be able to evaluate the benefit and possibilities of flood forecasting systems. He/she should know about the reliability and probability of model results and their interpretation. In group courses, they will discuss flood warning systems. By presenting scientific results from reports and papers, students gain skills in presentation and discussion techniques.
