Introduction and terminology; the earth atmosphere, structure and constituents, stability. Radiation, global radiation field, net radiation, radiation transfer in the forest, light climate, influence upon forests and trees. Energy- and heat balance, Bowen ratio, global temperature climate and thermal climate in forests. Water balance: precipitation, ET, atmospheric humidity, condensation, clouds; water balance and hydrological processes in forest, influences of tree species and management practices. Barometric pressure, winds, global and local circulation systems, airmasses, frontal systems and midlatitude cyclones. Wind and forests, windprofile and turbulent exchange. Climate classification and climatic change, topoclimate and forest sites, forest damage from climatic extremes.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
Imparting knowledge and understanding of processes and states in the earth atmosphere. Furthering the understanding of interactions between atmospheric variables and forests or trees as well as understanding the resulting states of forest ecosystems.
