Content

The students are directly involved in current research at the Institute of Chemistry of Renewable Resources. They work full-time for two weeks in the research laboratories of the Institute at the UFT Tulln or Muthgasse sites, depending on the respective topic.
The students acquire knowledge in the synthesis, conversion, modification, characterization, utilization, and analysis of renewable raw materials, especially biopolymers and modern (bio)materials.
The research topics are positioned at the interface between organic and analytical chemistry, polymer chemistry, and natural product chemistry. The research topics deal with the chemistry, structure, and analysis of renewable resources, covering all aspects of modern organic synthetic chemistry, structural-chemical aspects, and the development of analytical methods. For more details is referred to the Institute's webpage.

Previous knowledge expected

Professional and methodological competencies: preparative organic chemistry (synthesis, isolation, purification, and analysis of new compounds and materials), knowledge of spectroscopic techniques and other analytical methods.
Cognitive and practical competencies: solid knowledge of laboratory techniques and safety, knowledge of instrumental analytical chemistry.
Social skills and personal competencies: the ability to work in a team and take responsibility for collaborative, safe work in chemical research.
Ideally, the students have already completed the compulsory module "Feedstocks and Renewables".

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Professional and methodological competencies: practical insights into the principles of Green Chemistry in the context of a research-guided practical course in the laboratory.
Cognitive and practical competencies: preparation of experiments, planning and carrying out the preparative work, analysis and interpretation of measurement results, and preparation of protocols.
Social skills and personal competencies: the ability to work with renewable raw materials and the ability to work in a team.
