Valentin Fiala, PhD

Valentin Fiala is a researcher of the Working Group of Transdisciplinary Systems Research Group at the Division of Organic Farming, where he completed his doctorate in economics and social sciences. His current research interests are:

  • The societal role and perception of alternative food movements
  • Media presentation of agriculture and food production
  • The development of organic farming in the tension field between politics, economy and social expectations
  • Resilient urban food systems
  • Alternative uses of urban open spaces
  • “Edible solutions” for social urban problems


He has several years of experience in inter- and transdisciplinary project work, where he develops solutions for real-world problems together with various actors. He has been working in the field of arts-based research for many years. In this work he crosses the boundaries between science and art, using creative forms of expression to reflect on taken-for-granted-knowledge and generate new
understandings. In the course of this work, microwave cooking shows, reflective photobooths, critical carnival parties, zombie performances and thrash films have been created.
