The working group Contaminant Biogeochemistry was established in 2015 by Dr. Brandstätter-Scherr and focuses on the investigation of the abiotic and microbially mediated fate of organic compounds in the environment. Our research is interdisciplinary and spans environmental chemistry, geobiotechnology, molecular and enzyme biology, hydrogeology, soil sciences and process engineering. The major focus lies on organic contaminants, including but not limited to petroleum, polycyclic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, pesticides and micropollutants of soil and water, but also non-toxic hydrocarbons and fossile reservoirs may provide exciting insights into fundamental biogeochemical processes. Recent research topics include biotransformation of petroleum biomarkers, sequestration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soils, extracellular electron shuttle mediated Fe(III)-reduction, chemometrics of soil organic matter functional groups, geochemical and reservoir microbiology and the use of stable isotope methods and nanoparticles for in situ bioremediation. We have close collaborations inter alia with the University of Plymouth (UK), Masaryk University (Brno, CZ), University of Bologna (IT), the Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Austrian Centre for Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB).
