Selected fungi, bacteria, and viruses are highlighted in the context of infectious diseases. Microbial diseases are presented according to the human body. The following issues are presented for each disease: disease’s cause, portal of entry, symptoms, incubation period, transmission, and susceptible populations. A focus is also on the immunology of host-microbe interactions as well as treatment, therapies, and prevention of microbial infectious diseases.

- Fungal infections: pathogens, opportunists (skin and nail mycosis, systemic mycosis, lung infections, aspergillosis, candidiasis, cryptococcosis).
- Detection and evaluation of health risks of fungi in homes and at working places
- Rare fungal diseases: the emerging importance of black yeasts and their relatives (phaeohyphomycosis, chromoblasomycosis, brain infections).
- Treatments and therapeutics.

- selected bacterial infectious diseases (e.g., Gram-positive cocci, Gram-positive bacter with rudimentary filaments, Gram-negative cocci, Spirochaetes)
- host-microbe interactions (resident microbiota, host defense, phagocytosis, natural killer cells, specific immunity)

- selected viral infectious diseases (e.g., HIV, Influenza, Herpes, Hepatitis A,B,C, HPV)
- prophylaxis, treatments and therapeutics

Inhaltliche Voraussetzungen (erwartete Kenntnisse)

Basic knowledge in microbiology
