The aim is to add concepts and practices based on a coaching mindset to the supervisor/leader toolkit for developing people.
Objectives:
Identify the range of support roles we can play as supervisors/leaders and their trade-offs
Understand what makes people tick and why giving advice isn't always the best first option
Understand the value of a coaching mindset and how to co-construct effective learning conversations with the other person
Practice the key skills of staying curious, asking good questions, and listening deeply
Content:
As a supervisor/leader of PhD students, project researchers and others, we play critical roles in helping people develop and do great work. In wanting to be a good supervisor/leader though, we can hold the responsibility heavily and be quick to step into problem-solving and advice mode. What if our well-intentioned 'helping' was actually the most 'unhelpful' thing we can do for that person's development?
This seminar offers supervisors/leaders evidence-based concepts and techniqes, drawn from coaching, to help their people better learn and develop. The paradox is, that in promoting people's autonomy and development, we can actually achieve more with less work.
Methods:
The workshop will be highly interactive with a mix of self-reflection, group discussions, and interactive activities, complemented with evidence-based input throughout.

Univ.-Prof. i.R. Geraldine Fitzpatrick PhD
has a background as an Informatics/Human Computer Interaction researcher, and is passionate about developing future academic leaders and crafting more collegial sustainable research cultures. She is an awarded researcher, teacher and leader, with international experience in academia, industry and healthcare, building on a PhD in CS&EE (Uni of Queensland, Australia) and an MSc in Applied Positive/Coaching Psychology (UEL, UK). She is an ACM Distinguished Scientist, an IFIP Fellow, and recipient of a SIGCHI Lifetime Service Award, an IFIP TC-13 Pioneer Award, and a TU Informatics Best Teacher Award. She has extensive experience delivering academic career development and leadership development consultancy, speaking, training and coaching internationally, and also hosts the Changing Academic Life podcast series since 2016.
