Abstract:

Sharing is a phenomenon as old as humankind. However, recent technological developments, the increasing consumers’ awareness about environmental problems and the economic crises have paved the way for new sharing practices. “Sharing economy”, “platform economy” or “access-based consumption” are umbrella terms for several different forms of consumers’ sharing goods and services. Instead of buying goods and owning them, consumers gain temporary access to goods they need. Thus, consumers are provided with access to a good, mostly without the higher costs and responsibilities usually accompanied by ownership. The so-called sharing economy covers a range of transactions in almost all business areas, including tourism (e.g., accommodation sharing), food (e.g., communal gardens), and mobility (e.g., car sharing). Within this maze of concepts, it is difficult to discern where actual sharing ends and commerce begins. The current talk will set in to discuss these new sharing practices. Research will be presented on which practices consumers consider as being part of the sharing economy, how consumer organize sharing activities, the significant role of trust and regulation and the question whether these new forms of sharing empower consumers.

Der Vortrag wird in guter BOKU-Tradition, von Brot und Wein begleitet, sowie von einer öffentlichen Diskussion abgerundet.
