Tamara Artacker

Tamara Artacker

Email Address: tamara.artacker(at)boku.ac.at

In her PhD project Tamara focuses on the tensions between family farming and agroindustry. Specifically, she looks at the small-scale maize production in Ecuador and is interested in the role knowledge regimes and subjectivities play in the formation of specific society-nature relations.

Sonja Bauernschuster

Sonja Bauernschuster

Email Address: sonja.bauernschuster(at)boku.ac.at

Sonja’s PhD revolves around the forest transition in the Lao PDR. This work enables her to pursue her interest in hidden patterns and causes of observed phenomena by studying the socio-metabolic processes that cause ongoing reforestation processes.

Manan Bhan

Manan Bhan

Email Address: manan.bhan(at)boku.ac.at

Manans PhD evaluates land use impacts on biomass from three perspectives: He develops and analyses a timeseries of carbon stock changes going back to the mid-20th century, and characterizes land use impacts on biomass stocks and tree cover in the global tropics (where uncertainties in current estimates are highest) and he reviews existing methods used to allocate these impacts to biomass consumption trends globally to indicate methodological biases and future research frontiers.

Social Ecology has allowed Manan to indulge his 2 major loves - maps and forests, and so he works on analyzing the changes in vegetation biomass in the past century. Also on his agenda, ‘what exactly is a forest?’

Anna-Katharina Brenner

Anna-Katharina Brenner

Email Address: anna.brenner(at)boku.ac.at

After working on environmental justice matters in Austria in my Master's Thesis,  a short trip to the Sociology Department, working on urban transitions and social policies in the light of environmental governance, I now close the circle by investigating the feasibility of alternative resource use patterns in the Metropolitan Region Vienna-Bratislava. Hence, my focus is on peri-urban governance structures enabling or hindering sustainability transitions.

Lisa Kaufmann

Lisa Kaufmann

Email Address: lisa.kaufmann(at)boku.ac.at

Lisa tries to detect the web of food-related biomass flows from land-use via trade and livestock systems to the people. More specifically, through identifying patterns in agri-food metabolisms of sub-national regions, she seeks to support more region-specific approaches to global challenges.

Barbara Plank

Barbara Plank

Email Address: barbara.plank(at)boku.ac.at

Barbara tries hard to understand the magnitude and functionality of the complete social metabolism (inputs/outputs, flows/stocks, production/consumption) and is heavily working on finding a compromise between the two extremes technological solutions and sufficiency. For that major challenge, many available tools (material flow analysis, input-output analysis, dynamic stock modelling, statistics/econometrics) can be of use for her.
