The rivers of Rio de Janeiro: urban nature at work in the early 20th century

Rio de Janeiro's rivers are more than just part of the city's scenery. They work endlessly to bring nutrients, make industrial and domestic life viable, and they often hide, buried underground or repressed by rigid canal walls. And sometimes they remind us of their existence, in floods or droughts. Studies of the city of Rio de Janeiro in the 20th century should uncover these multiple roles of urban rivers, organic machines that are important arteries of urban nature.

Kein Land der Erde erreichte in den vergangenen drei Jahrzehnten soziale Mindestanforderungen, ohne dabei ökologische Grenzen zu übertreten. Das fand ein britisches Forschungsteam unter Beteiligung der BOKU heraus. Ihre Ergebnisse gehen sogar noch weiter, denn: Kein Land steuert bis 2050 überhaupt darauf zu, soziale Grundbedürfnisse mit fairen Ressourcenanteilen zu stillen.
