Guest Lecture: David Haviland, University of California

Lessons learned through California almond growers’ efforts to advance sustainable pest management

David Haviland is an extension entomologist with the University of California’s Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

He works in the heart of California’s Central Valley where he is responsible for helping farmers implement pest management practices that are safe, effective and affordable.

David has received numerous integrated pest management awards for his work in grapes, almonds, pistachios, citrus, cherries and blueberries related to the adoption of reduced-risk pest management practices.

He is currently in Europe for three months as part of a sabbatical leave to interact with colleagues that are working entomology issues similar to those found in California. In his presentation, he discussed the triumphs and challenges associated with two decades of efforts by the California almond industry to transition from pesticide-based pest management practices with those rooted in principles of sustainability.
