Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Resources

Welcome

Our department plays a central role in the research and teaching of physics, chemistry, mathematics and statistics with a special focus on the characterization, conversion and use of renewable resources. We strive to develop innovative (bio)materials and future-oriented biorefineries in order to contribute to a sustainable living environment for our society.

The research activities at the department are diverse and range from synthesis to (bio)physical and (bio)chemical characterization methods to analytics. We work intensively on biopolymers, in particular lignocelluloses, proteins and glycans, as well as colloidal systems and biological interfaces. In addition, we develop experimental methods and consider energy-related aspects, supported by mathematical and computer-based modeling and simulation.

We provide our students with both fundamental and application-oriented knowledge. This takes place within the framework of our Bachelor's and Master's degree programs as well as in our doctoral programs “Advanced Biorefineries: Chemistry and Materials”, “Bioprocess Engineering, Biomaterials and Biointerfaces”, “AgriGenomics” and “Build like Nature: Resilient Buildings, Materials and Society” as well as the PhD program “Biomolecular Technology of Proteins”.
