Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Resources

Welcome

The central tasks of the Department of Natural Sciences and Sustainable Resources are research, research-led teaching and science communication on mathematics, statistics, physics and chemistry with a focus on the characterization, conversion and use of renewable raw materials, as well as the development of (bio)materials and biorefineries of the future. Research topics include but are not limited to synthesis, (bio)physical and (bio)chemical characterization methods and analytics, biopolymers (especially lignocelluloses, proteins and glycans), colloidal systems and biological interfaces, supplemented by the development of experimental methods, energy engineering considerations, as well as mathematical and computer-based modeling and simulation.

The department conveys basic and application-oriented knowledge and skills for a large part of the Bachelor's and Master's programmes at BOKU University, for the doctoral programme in Natural Resources and Life Sciences and the doctoral schools "Advanced Biorefineries: Chemistry and Materials (ABC&M)", "Bioprocess Engineering, Biomaterials and Biointerfaces", "AgriGenomics", "Build like Nature: Resilient Buildings, Materials and Society", as well as the PhD program "Biomolecular Technology of Proteins".
