Welcome

The mission of the newly established Department of Biotechnology and Food Sciences, founded in 2025, lies in innovative research and teaching in the fields of biotechnology, plant and cell biology, as well as food sciences. 

The department trains students in various Bachelor's and Master's programs, aiming to develop them into internationally visible experts and thereby prepare the next generation for the significant challenges facing our society. The Bachelor's programs include Food and Biotechnology and Agricultural Sciences, while the Master's programs cover Biotechnology, Safety in the Food Chain, and Food Science and Technology. Additionally, the department plays a central role in the doctoral schools of Bioprocess Engineering, Biomaterials and Biointerfaces, AgriGenomics, the PhD program in Biomolecular Technology of Proteins, as well as the planned DocSchool Food. 

Since January 2025, the Department of Biotechnology and Food Sciences has united established institutes at BOKU, which were previously part of the Departments of Food Science and Technology, Biotechnology, Bionanosciences, and Applied Genetics and Cell Biology.
