Johannes L. Frieß and Bernd Giese, together with colleagues from the Centre for Science and Peace Research at Hamburg University, published comprehensive biosecurity policy recommendations under the title 'Improving Governance in the Age of Synthetic Biology, Artificial Intelligence and Converging Threats'.
This article summarises the results of the Synthetic Bioweapons project, which was funded by the German Foundation for Peace Research (Deutsche Stiftung Friedensforschung).
In short, the authors make the following recommendations:
- Raising awareness through sensitisation, education and incentivisation;
- improving biosecurity by implementing robust training and monitoring systems;
- adapting governance to keep pace with advances in synthetic biology; and
- strengthening international treaties and establishing robust verification.
