Car Bet: Three Months Without a Private Car
Three Months Without a Private Car
From May to July 2025, 46 individuals from 37 households gave up their private cars and instead used sustainable alternatives such as public transport, carsharing, rental bikes, taxis, or walking. Participants received a monthly mobility budget of up to €500 to try out these alternatives.
The interest in the Car Bet was overwhelming: nearly 3,000 households applied to participate in the challenge.
Scientific Support by the Institute for Transport Studies
The Institute for Transport Studies at BOKU is providing scientific support for the project and conducting comprehensive data collection. During the three-month test phase, tracking data was collected and is currently being analyzed. Additionally, qualitative interviews with participants will be conducted in the fall to gain deeper insights into their mobility behavior and decision-making processes.
The final report, including all results and findings, will be published at the end of 2025.
Awarded the VCÖ Mobility Award
The project has already been honored with the VCÖ Mobility Award Vienna and the VCÖ Mobility Award Austria in the category "Sharing and Multimodal Mobility." The VCÖ Mobility Award is Austria's largest competition for sustainable mobility and recognizes innovative projects that make transportation more environmentally friendly, safer, and more efficient.
A Significant Step Toward the Mobility Transition
The Car Bet demonstrates the importance of exploring and testing new approaches to sustainable mobility. Through its scientific support, the Institute for Transport Studies is making a valuable contribution to the mobility transition in Vienna and beyond.
We thank Wiener Linien, the Währing district, all participants, and partners for their support and look forward to presenting the results at the end of the year!
