During a press conference hosted by the science network Diskurs, Sandra Wegener (BOKU) and Günter Emberger (TU Wien) discussed the structural changes required for a sustainable mobility transition.

Key points from the discussion:

  • Micro-PT as a Lifeline: Demand-responsive services, such as call-taxis and shuttles, are essential to closing the "last mile" between public transport stops and final destinations.
  • Ensuring Social Participation: Guaranteed mobility goes beyond simple economic viability. It is about enabling independent movement for seniors, youth, and households without a (second) car.
  • Structural Equality: For a genuine shift to occur, active mobility (walking and cycling) must be given infrastructure and financial parity with motorized individual transport.

Despite high demand, innovative projects like Styria's regiomobil face significant financial hurdles. The experts are calling for clear frameworks and spatial planning that prioritizes sustainability over car-centricity.
