Science meets Rewilding – Visiting an inspiring restoration site in Thailand

Rebecca Hood-Nowotny recently visited Dr. Orracha Sae-Tun – a BOKU alumna – and her team from Kasetsart University at a former mining site located in the Phang Nga Forestry Research Station in Thailand.

Forty years after mining operations ceased, the site now features impressive forest regeneration. It stands as a powerful example of the potential of science-driven ecological restoration. The recovery process highlights the effectiveness of interdisciplinary research across forestry and soil science – even under challenging tropical conditions.

The visit was funded through the ASEA-UNINET Bernd Rode Award, which was granted to Katharina Keiblinger and her team in recognition of outstanding international cooperation.
