The Institute of Soil Research at the Night of Science in Krems
The Institute of Soil Research participated in the Night of Science in Krems with an interactive hands-on station. Together with the projects ADAPT4K and CURIOSOIL, current research on the impacts of climate change on forest and soil ecosystems was presented in an accessible and engaging way.
Under the title “How climate change affects forests and soils”, visitors were invited to explore several research activities. These included extracting tree-ring increment cores from wood discs and examining them under the microscope, gaining insights into bark beetle development under favourable climatic conditions, discovering soil organisms through microscopy, and determining soil texture using simple hands-on methods.
The strong participation and lively interest highlighted the importance of science communication and citizen science in fostering a better understanding of ecological processes. The Institute of Soil Research would like to thank all visitors for their curiosity and engagement, as well as the organisers for hosting a successful event.
