Institute of Soil Research at the Long Night of Research 2026

With three interactive stations in Vienna and Tulln, the Institute of Soil Research showcased the diversity of modern soil research to a broad audience.

This year, the Institute of Soil Research once again actively participated in the Long Night of Research (Lange Nacht der Forschung) with a total of three stations in Vienna and Tulln.

In Tulln, visitors explored how forests and soils respond to climate stress at the interactive station “Climate Stress in Forests.” Tree rings, soil water storage, and the links between forest health, soil functions, and climate change were brought to life through hands-on activities and demonstrations. A second station, titled “What is my poop good for?”, focused on nutrient cycles and sustainable resource use.

In Vienna, the Institute of Soil Research joined an interdisciplinary soil science stand together with the Institute of Physics and Materials Science and the Institute of Mountain Risk Engineering. Visitors gained insights into soil functions, carbon cycles, earthworms, soil aggregate stability, and alpine natural hazards.

A particular highlight was the interactive photo corner, where visitors could dress up as soil organisms — a creative way to make the hidden world beneath our feet visible and engaging.

The Long Night of Research provided an excellent opportunity to communicate current research to the public, engage directly with visitors, and highlight the importance of healthy soils for climate, ecosystems, and society.
