Save the Date: SOILATHON 2026 – Biochar for Carbon Farming

On 17 June 2026, SOILATHON 2026 will bring together researchers, students, farmers, advisors, entrepreneurs, and innovators at BOKU University to explore the potential of biochar for carbon farming and resilient soils.

Biochar for Carbon Farming – From Soil Innovation to Business Solutions

How can biochar contribute to climate-smart agriculture, carbon farming, and resilient soils?

SOILATHON 2026 will provide a platform for exchange between science, practice, business, and policy, focusing on innovative solutions and business ideas around biochar use in Europe.

Biochar is increasingly recognised for its potential to support long-term carbon sequestration, improve water retention and nutrient management, and enhance soil health. At the same time, important challenges remain regarding sustainable biomass sourcing, production systems, logistics, monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), and market uptake.

Building on scientific advances and knowledge generated within EJP SOIL, the event aims to foster interdisciplinary collaboration and accelerate innovation for sustainable carbon farming.
