The dual role of azoles: lifesaving antifungals and drivers of resistance – a One Health perspective

Azoles are essential antifungal agents used in agriculture, veterinary medicine, and human medicine. This review, published in Nature Communications and co-authored by Prof. Joseph Strauss and Dr. Thomas Svoboda (Institute of Microbial Genetics), examines the role of azoles from agricultural, medical, and veterinary perspectives.

One health and resistant fungi: a challenging balancing act between food security and patient survival

One Health highlights the connection between human medicine, veterinary medicine, and agriculture. In this editorial, to which Prof. Joseph Strauss and Dr. Thomas Svoboda (Institute of Microbial Genetics) contributed, the issue of “bred” azole resistance is examined, and the need for other or new classes of active ingredients—which should be reserved for human medicine to treat infections caused by azole-resistant fungi—is discussed.
