Use of dehulled sunflower meal in a diet for pig fattening

Summary

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of the use of 0, 9, 18 or 27 % dehulled sunflower meal in diets for pig fattening. Sunflower substituted 0, 33, 66 or 100 % of the soybean meal. The feeding trial comprised four groups with 15 pigs in each group. Up to 60 kg live weight the fattening performance was affected negatively, when using sunflower meal without lysin supplementation. Between 60 and 100 kg live weight there were no significant differences between groups were obtained. Digestibility of crude fibre and nitrogen-free extracts decreased when sunflower meal was used. Regarding all other criterias of slaughtering performance and meat quality, no significant differences between groups were found, only fatty acid composition of the back fat changed. The use of sunflower meal resulted in significantly lower content of saturated acids whereas the percentage of linoleic acid increased. Key-words: sunflower meal, pig fattening, meat quality, digestibility.
