The discussion focusses on current developments and contradictions in global food production.
To begin, Hanno Jentzsch will present his new book Harvesting State Support (University of Toronto Press, 2021). The book analyzes local interpretations of the national agricultural reform process in Japan, where a previously untouchable protection and support regime is being upheaved.
The following discussion places the developments in Japan into a global context. The participants will discuss the frequently contradictory dynamics of state interventions, capitalistic production and sustainable land use with examples from Austria, the EU, Japan and the Global South. The focus lies on the potentials and barriers for alternative local initiatives as well as the intersectional perspective on gender roles and demographic challenges.
The event can be followed via Livestream, with the possibility of asking questions, or at the university library.
