“Alerta Amazonia – When fabric speaks” presents hand-embroidered textiles from the Amazon region that tell stories of resistance and climate justice. Kick-off event on October 1 with Doris Damyanovic (BOKU), Elfriede More (BMLUK), Erwin Eder (HORIZONT3000) and climate activist Edson Krenak.

A powerful traveling exhibition is coming to BOKU University from October 1 to November 8: Alerta Amazonia – When fabric speaks.

The opening will take place on Tuesday, October 1, 2025, at 12:15 PM in the Aula of the Franz Schwackhöfer Haus at BOKU University.

Following welcome addresses from Doris Damyanovic (BOKU), Elfriede More (BMLUK) and Erwin Eder (HORIZONT3000), visitors will experience video messages from Brazil as well as an expert discussion with Indigenous activist and author Edson Krenak. The event will conclude with a reception and refreshments. Moderation: Daniela Paredes.

The exhibition brings Arpilleras from the Brazilian Amazon to Austria, showing how this unique textile art, which originated in Chile, has found a new, powerful meaning in the Amazon. Female artists document their lived experiences and activism in the context of environmental destruction and the unfolding climate crisis affecting their everyday life.
