On May 22, 2026, International Day for Biological Diversity, the BOKU University Garden will open its doors to anyone interested in botany. Vegetation ecologist Leonid Rasran from the Institute of Botany will lead a tour of the garden and introduce the grounds, parts of the conservation collection, and current biodiversity projects. The meeting point for all garden enthusiasts is at 4:00 p.m. at the main entrance of the garden (1180 Vienna, Peter-Jordan-Straße 63).
The BOKU Garden operates within the framework of the Association of Austrian Botanical Gardens. The participating institutions house living collections of botanical rarities and fulfill a wide variety of tasks in the fields of research and teaching. They are dedicated to the conservation and cultivation of endangered plant species and offer the opportunity to continue cultivating or even propagating a plant that has become rare or is endangered in its natural habitat in a protected location.
International Day for Biological Diversity The International Day for Biological Diversity commemorates the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, which was adopted in Nairobi on May 22, 1992. Today, with over 190 parties, it is one of the most successful United Nations conventions. Its objectives are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of biological diversity, and the equitable sharing of benefits derived from the use of genetic resources.
