The 16th fib International PhD Symposium in Civil Engineering will take place from 9–11 September 2026 at BOKU University in Vienna, Austria. Continuing a tradition established in 1996, the symposium provides an international platform dedicated specifically to doctoral researchers in structural and civil engineering.
Around 150 PhD students from internationally renowned universities are expected to participate, together with their supervisors, professors, researchers, and experts from academia and industry. In total, approximately 250 participants are expected to attend the symposium.
A central idea of the fib PhD Symposium is to give doctoral researchers the opportunity to present their current work and discuss it directly with experienced professors and internationally recognised experts. Each presentation is followed by scientific discussion, allowing the PhD students to receive valuable feedback, exchange different perspectives, and gain new insights that can contribute to the further development and quality of their research.
The scientific programme covers a broad range of topics in contemporary civil and structural engineering, including material and structural performance, numerical modelling and simulation, sustainable and circular construction, artificial intelligence and digital methods, structural monitoring and assessment, durability and reliability, advanced reinforcement systems, additive manufacturing, connections and fastenings, and soil–structure interaction.
In addition to the scientific programme, the symposium offers an excellent environment for international networking and collaboration. By bringing together young researchers, experienced academics, and representatives from different institutions and countries, the event encourages the exchange of knowledge beyond individual research projects and creates opportunities for new scientific contacts, interdisciplinary cooperation, and future partnerships within the international fib community.
Returning to Vienna after more than two decades, the 2026 edition continues the symposium’s mission of supporting the next generation of civil and structural engineers, promoting scientific excellence, and strengthening international collaboration in the development of safe, sustainable, resilient, and innovative infrastructure.
