Hydraulic engineering and hydraulic modelling
Hydraulic Engineering
The hydropower related components of water resources management focus on the preservation and on the optimization of existing hydroelectric plants, and on the optimal design of new facilities (e.g. improvements to the sediment continuum, migration aids for organisms). For stream conservancy, the main focus is related to measures that compensate for the adverse effects caused by previous regulations (e.g. riverbed erosion, restoration) and on the flood protection of residential areas and on the creation of natural water retention areas. Both the flow behavior as well as the sediment mass balance are taken into account during the planning stages.
Hydraulic Modelling
The foundations of this field are anchored in experimental hydraulics, numerical hydrodynamic modeling and hydrometric field investigations. The emphasis of this field is on the development and the optimization of technical measures which meet economic as well as social objectives, and which also contribute to securing or to improving the ecological status or the ecological potential of aquatic systems.
