BiotopeCity: Between Concrete and Flowers - Wild Bees and Wasps in the City
The much-lauded greenery in the fight against urban heating does not come alone: there is no flora without fauna - and that includes insects. Cities are often seen as gray concrete deserts - but urban biodiversity is surprising.
Dr. Dominique Zimmermann provides insights into her research on wild bees and wasps in Vienna. She shows why cities in particular offer diverse habitats, which structures promote biodiversity and what surprising discoveries she has already made.
Dominique Zimmerman is an entomologist and curator at the Natural History Museum in Vienna. Her research focuses on wild bees and other stinging insects, in particular the decline in species and its causes. She also teaches at the University of Vienna.
Zimmermann is co-author of the Insect Manifesto, which has been immortalized in 13 plaques in front of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences since 2023 as part of the “Walk of Insects” artwork by Austrian artist Edgar Honetschläger.
This lecture series is a cooperation between the Foundation Biotopes City, the Institute for Landscape Planning (ILAP) and the Institute of Engineering Biology and Landscaping (IBLB) of the University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences Vienna.
