Retreat-Resist-Respond

Last week in Venice, the Holcim Foundation Forum gathered international experts to explore how communities can adapt to rising climate risks. Representing BOKU University’s Institute of Landscape Planning (iLAP), Thomas Thaler contributed a crucial perspective on relocation, climate adaptation, and changing landscapes. He highlighted that climate-driven retreat is not just a technical matter but a deeply social one, affecting people’s identities, security and livability. He also emphasized the importance of landscape planning and #NBS, urging planners to move beyond purely engineered responses, by linking policy, architecture, justice, and planning.

Many thanks to the Holcim Foundation for the invitation and the chance to contribute to this vital conversation.
