The lecture is divided into the sections technical mechanics, hydrodynamics and development and construction.

In the first part mechanics of rigid bodies with the main focuses strength of materials with fundamentals in stresses and strains, stresses in bars, tension and compression, transverse shear stresses, torsion, bending, combined stresses, statically indeterminate systems and buckling of bars will be presented.

Material science fundamentals are taught including the main classes of materials, mechanical and other properties and the associated testing procedures for their quantification.

The aim of the part hydrodynamics is to discuss the following problems: one dimensional flow of ideal fluids; one dimensional flow of viscous Newtonian fluids; laminar and turbulent flow in pipes of circular cross-section

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

1) Knowledge:
The students know and are able to define important physical quantities like force, torque, pressure, velocity, momentum, work and power. Further, they are familiar witth the basic terms, equations, and performance figures, especially with the conservation laws in technical mechanics and fluid mechanics. The students are also familiar with the basics of flow machines, know and understand the purpose and construction of flow machines as well as the principles for design and calculation. The students know the main material classes used today and are able to describe relevant mechanical and other material properties.

2) Skills:
The students are in a position to solve basic mechanical and fluid dynamic problems by applying Newton's Laws, mass, momentum and energy balance. They are able to solve these relevant equations without special equipment. Moreover, they are in a position to apply the acquired knowledge about flow machines in a way that allows for tackling general problems in connection to the design of arrangements of pumps and/or compressors. The students are able to read and interpret binary phase diagrams, in particular the iron-carbon phase diagram. Additionally, they can explain important material properties and their relevance including the associated testing procedures for their quantification, in particular the stress-strain test. They are also able to explain the structural reasons for improvement of mechanical properties of metallic materials.

3) Competences:
Based on the acquired knowledge and skills the students are in the position to contribute to the solution of technical problems in a process-oriented company. They have the competence to set up own calculations to check technical processes or proposed solutions for plausibility and soundness of design in order to lead a qualified discussion with technical experts. Further, the students have the competence to judge upon the suitability of a material for a certain purpose and to rationally propose solutions in case of mechanical failure or corrosion issues.
