Students learn to know approaches and concepts to characterize and evaluate various mountain forest services and functions based on site and stand attributes. Quantitative and qualitative indicators to characterize potential and effectiveness of services and functions are discussed. By means of case studies design and implementation of silvicultural management concepts for various multiple-objective settings in mountain forests are discussed. Interrelationships between different services and functions are analysed and made explicit. Qualitative (e.g. conceptual models of ecosystem dynamics) and quantitative tools (e.g., predictive ecosystem models) to support the design and evaluation of silvicultural concepts are introduced and applied in case study exercises.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
Students shall be aquainted with approaches and methods to (1) operationally describe and evaluate various mountain forest services and functions (e.g., timber production, nature conservation, protection against natural hazards), and (2) to derive silvicultural management concepts to secure multiple ecosysetm goods and services.
