Aim is to give an overview of the Austrian politics of waste management based on current challenges and the EU circular economy development. Basics of waste management politics are presented in the first lectures. Case studies are shown based on different media. Questions are prepared and discussed jointly with the students. Technical, economic, social, legislative and ethical aspects will be considered.

Recent problems in waste management are elaborated independently by the students (teams of three students) and results are presented within the framework of a simulation game.

Within this course the following topics and problems are dealt with:

- Waste management and Circular Economy- an environmental and socio-political task? Introduction and overview

- Waste Management policy in Austria and EU – basics, instruments and stakeholders

- Costs and financing of waste management – economics of waste and examples from the commercial and communal sector

- incentive systems to enhance the achievement of recycling and prevention goals

- Consumption and prevention of specific waste streams

- Specific Case study: food waste prevention

- Are we approaching a sustainable society dealing without landfills? – Status quo, concepts, ideas, and future visions…

- Reuse and informal sector in waste management: Cross-boarder waste transport, role of "informal" sector by Austrian and international examples

An excursion to a waste management association will also take place during the course. Due to the Corona crises most probably in a virtual form during the WS 2020/21.

Attention: compulsory attendance! Due to the current CORONA-situation there will be a mix of physical presence and online meetings via ZOOM during the winter semester course. An audio and video-connection is necessary during the ZOOM meetings to graduate the course!!


Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge of waste management is necessary. Attending the course "Abfallwirtschaft und Abfallentsorgung" (813.100), "Abfall als Ressource" (813.103) or other adequate lectures is strongly recommended. Also the master lectures "Abfallogistik" and "Entsorgungstechnik" wpould be helpful to work on the simulation game.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Learning outcomes after successfully completing the course are: ability to realize, understand and critically discuss current problems, processes and economic, political and social aspects in waste management as well as to develop and draft concepts and solution options for future strategies.
