The seminar in combination with an excursion offers an introduction to social and economic causes of land use change in Austria on different scales (from Austria to the individual farm level). In the seminar part, the basics of spatial patterns and temporal development of land use in Austria are introduced in preparation for the excursion. The students prepare inputs on economic, social, political and biogeographical framework conditions of land use and agriculture. During a full-day excursion to the Traisen/Pielachtal region in Lower Austria we will visit farms with different types of production (grassland, arable land and wine/fruit growing). In direct discussions with farmers and in the follow-up of the excursion we will work out which factors influence land use decisions of the farmers and how this is reflected in the observed land use patterns.
