Soil degradation and the decline in soil productivity in the tropics and subtropics are explained on the basis of case studies. Climate and soil properties in the tropics and sub-tropics are discussed. Diversity and global distribution of soils in the tropics and sub-tropics are presented on the basis of the WRB-system. Agricultural systems in the tropics and their specific environmental conditions are explained for the main crops. Of special importance are the sustainable use of soil, soil as a resource which is renewable to a limited degree, and the relevance of sustainable soil use for development policy, in the context of the Agenda 21, soil and hunger, and food safety.
