- The role of water
- Soil types
- Erosion and desertification
- Agriculture
- Soil greenhouse gases
- Fire
- Global Change

General theory will be presented along with recent research focusing on soils in arid and semiarid areas.

Dates for SS 2021 are:

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge on soils and ecosystems

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

By the end of the lecture, the students will be able:
- To describe the main ecological and socio-economic features of arid and semiarid areas.
- To identify and discuss limitations and opportunities of agricultural production (croplands and livestock) in arid and semiarid areas.
- To assess the relevance of soils in arid and semiarid areas for the production and consumption of greenhouse gases.
- To discuss potential consequences of global change in arid and semiarid areas
