Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful attendance of this course the students gained advanced knowledge in the chemical composition and functions of macro- and micronutrients as well as their detailed digestive and metabolic processes in the human body.
Students can identify the optimal method of nutritional sciences to describe body composition on various levels or to determine food intake of individuals and groups. Furthermore, students are familiar with the definition of requirements and reference values for nutrient intake and recognise the importance to define dietary requirements for specific groups.
Students know factors leading to variations and changes in dietary patterns and they can compare the physiological signals of hunger and satiety as well as the published theories of their regulation. With the acquired knowledge, students can estimate the impact of the diet on nutrition related diseases.
After successful attendance of this course the students are well prepared for the subsequent elective subjects in the field of nutrition sciences (Nutrition Physiology 976.311, Metabolism Physiology 976.310).
