PART 2
(Department of Chemistry)

Max. 2 groups with 10 students each, date: CW 5/2022, each day from 9 am to 5 pm, location: DCh, Org.Lab., Muthgasse

Experiment 1: Biocatalytic reduction of acetophenones with carrots and yield determination by NMR

Experiment 2: Extraction of carrot and broccoli pigments and their qualitative analysis using thin-layer chromatography (TLC)

Experiment 3: Isolation of caffeine from tea by means of solid/liquid Soxhlet extraction

Experiment 4: Solubility of biopolymers, biopolymer derivatives, and monomeric components

Experiment 5: Obtaining furfural from bran or oatmeal and qualitative evidence of product formation

Previous knowledge expected

Part 1:
Attendence of the VO "Biobased and biodegradable plastics" is recommended.
Basic knowledge about the disciplined and attentive handling of raw materials and machines

Part 2:
Principles of extraction and chromatographic techniques. Responsible handling of chemicals.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Part 1:

After successfully completing this course the students are familiar with methods for processing bioplastics, plastics and renewable resources using extrusion and injection moulding. In addition the students acquire knowledege about the mechanical properties of different materials by comparing the results of the tests they conducted.

Part 2:

This part of the practical course is aiming at the scholars become better aquainted with structure-dependent properties of biopolymers and the potential of natural products as source for the production of value-added products. The course impart knowledge and practical skills regarding basic techniques used in commercial applications of renewable materials such as extraction, chemical degradation for obtaining fine chemicals or cross-linking. Furthermore, competence in the field of chromatographic separation of natural extractive mixtures will be raised.
