Understanding landscapes as volumes rather than surfaces has been a key strategy in expanding the scope of practice for urban landscape architecture. In particular, an awareness of underground dynamics and potential helps landscape architects lead multi-disciplinary urban design and engineering teams adapting cities to climate change.
This course will introduce some of the technical literature about urban climate adaptation but will focus on the mythical and cultural associations designers can make use of to engage public audiences in learning about the underground environment of cities like Vienna. Students will be encouraged to draw speculative as well as dimensioned cross-sections and maps, and make video and sound recordings that introduce public audiences to the world of the urban underground. The instructor will help students make connections from these representations to urban climate adaptation practice and policy.

Previous knowledge expected

There are no requirements for this class except a willingness to engage in drawing and mapping exercises. Students with a visual or walking disability can arrange to take alternate field trips that are appropriate for their situation.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students will learn to engage non-technical audiences in the potential of underground urban spaces to play a role in adaptation to our changing climate. They will gain mapping and drawing skills that allow them to represent the functional and symbolic characteristics of surficial geology, bedrock geology and urban water systems. They will be introduced to the use of video and sound recordings as tools for professional design speculation and spatial analysis, as well as for engaging the public in understanding urban space and participating in decision-making.
