Previous knowledge expected

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The lecture gives an overview and a basic introduction to the principles of mechanical and thermal processes. Traditional processes as, e.g., filtration, centrifugation, distillation, or extraction are treated thoroughly. Modern processes as, e.g., supercritical extraction, chromatograpy or membran processes are biefly introduced and will be treated in depth in the lecture Mechanical and thermal Process Technology II. Basic knowledge from the lectures Fundamentals of Mechanical Engineering (especially flow mechanics), Thermodynamics, and Energy, Momentum and Mass Transfer are applied in this lecture in the modelling of the processes which are useful for the understanding of the processes but can also be applied for design and scale-up.
