Content

Metabolomics is a young discipline, which deals with the global detection of the entire set of low molecular weight metabolites of a biological system (i.e. the metabolome). This course will teach the fundamentals of modern metabolomics research. The general concept will be illustrated with a practical example study on the metabolism of wheat. The lecture part will cover the basic principles of metabolism and the involved methodology. The practical section will be held in small student groups. You will carry out a complete metabolomics experiment involving
1) the treatment of wheat plants in the greenhouse
2) sampling and sample preparation
3) sample measurements by HPLC and mass spectrometry
4) data evaluation
5) biological interpretation of results

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge in biochemistry, instrumental analytical chemistry and statistics

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After attending the course you will be able to
1) Explain and apply the general concept and experimental design of a metabolomics study
2) Critically inspect your measurement data for the presence and identity of metabolites
3) Use univariate and multivariate statistics to visualize and evaluate experimental data
4) Interpret and present the results of a metabolomics experiment based on the initial biological question
