The practical courses for the bachelor's programme LMBT (H217) are related to the lectures "General Microbiology" and "Fundamentals of Bioprocess Engineering".

In three thematically linked modules, the production of a technically relevant protein by fermentation with a recombinant E. coli strain (module Fermentation) and quality control measures - such as the analysis of a produced product (module ELISA) and the monitoring of raw materials and process environment (module Monitoring) - are carried out in practice.

These modules represent essential parts of a practical biotechnological production process and thus represent a fundamental training step for the subsequent Master programmes.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After completing the course, the students are able to carry out a simple yet multi-layered biotechnological production process in its entirety. They master the interdisciplinary techniques of experimental design for simple quality control measures, the aseptic operation of a lab-scale fermenter over several days, the necessary bioprocess engineering calculations and the performance of an ELISA test for the quantitative determination of biotechnologically produced products.
The students are also able to carefully and completely document all experiments as required in future professional fields of activity.
