Protected Area Management using QGIS

This course introduces into basic concepts of protected area management and planning using the freely available Geographic Information System QGIS.

The student operates as a fictional nature park manager and develops a management plan for a specific nature park in Austria or Germany. During the course, students will develop maps that will form the basis of the management plan, including an overview of the nature park, monitoring concepts for birds and bats, nature park zoning, tourism infrastructure and others.

Previous knowledge expected

Basic familiarity with GIS is an asset, but no requirement

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successfully participating in this course, students will have a basic understanding of:

• key terms, concepts and principles in protected area planning and management

• computational tools for spatial analysis and map development in QGIS

• practical skills to develop protected area management plans
