The lecture gives an introduction in the wildlife ecological fundamentals for protection and sustainable use of wildlife under particular regard of forest management. Selected examples show the interaction of wildlife and habitat in forest ecosystems. Principles of forest and wildlife management which are necessary for maintainig biodiversity are discussed. Relationships between forestry and habitat management are explained by indicator species, habitat evaluation, habitat fragmentation, scales and levels in wildlife ecology, forest-pasture problems, and different silvicultural systems with their impact on wildlife. The legislative framework and international conventions relating to protection and sustainable use of natural resources are shown.

Aim of the lecture is the improvement of knowledge and understanding about the possible impacts of forestry and hunting measures on biodiversity in general and in particular on wildlife.
