Content

The overall goal is to increase the theoretical and practical know-how on the fascinating world of fungi, their role in the development of the natural environment, their importance in our daily life and how they can be employed in modern applied research and biotechnology.

Previous knowledge expected

Basics in Microbiology

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After attendance of the lectures the students will:
- know about and formulate the basics of general mycology (history, evolution, biodiversity, systematics, life forms etc)
- be able to outline the most important fungal classes with specific examples focusing on their importance for natural environment and the use in modern biotechnology
- be able to describe the human use of fungi in different industrial sectors (food, medicine, material science, agriculture, bioremediation etc.) with the emphasis of biotechnological processes and products, particularly from yeast
- be able to understand interactions of fungi with other organisms, different strategies of surviving extreme conditions, their pathogeny and toxicity to humans and plants

The practical experiments will help the students to:
- execute a biotechnological production process in shake flasks of an industrially important compound from start (media preparation) until the end (identification or activity test of the compound)
- isolate fungi and yeast from different habitats and identify species by applying modern techniques such as DNA sequencing and mass spectrometry
- detect and identify different fungi-plant interactions (mycorrhiza) by staining techniques and microscopy and understand its importance for the natural environment
- individually plan and execute creative experiments with slime molds to study motility and chemotaxis and its role in current applied research on human made systems such as highway/train networks or escape routes
